Digestate from 'Super' AD Facility Utilised on Local Farms

Leeds.UK based organic waste recycling specialist, 4R Recycling, has collected the first loads of digestate from Biffa's recently commissioned Poplars Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility in Staffordshire, and delivered the organic material to nearby farms.

According to the company, the digestate will be used on the farms located within a 10 mile radius of the Poplars facility as a fertiliser replacement to improve ground quality for growing essential crops.

The AD digestate cake will be spread and incorporated onto bare ground which will then be seeded to grow wheat, barley or maize.

4R said that it has collected over 450 tonnes of digestate from the facility in three weeks, via its transportation fleet.

These loads mark the start of the three year contract that 4R Group was awarded earlier in the year by Biffa Waste Services to manage and recycle all the digestate from its new state-of-the-art food waste treatment facility.

4R Group said that it provides a full-service offering to organisations producing organic and other "difficult-yet-valuable" waste streams, and manufactures products from waste which would otherwise go to landfill.
