A renewable gas processing facility that will convert landfill gas into transport fuel is under construction at the Seminole Road Landfill in Ellenwood, Georgia.

The program is funded by DeKalb County and a U.S. Department of Energy grant made possible through President Obama's federal stimulus program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

DeKalb has the largest project component of the Clean Cities Atlanta program, with the a grant providing $7.8 million to the county help cover the cost of building the landfill gas to compressed natural gas (CNG) facility, two CNG refuelling stations and sanitation vehicles.

According to the county, through this program its Sanitation Department will convert 70 vehicles to run on the CNG produced by the DeKalb County Renewable Fuels Facility.

Compared to the cost of diesel fuel, the county says that it is forecasting fuel savings of $3 million over the next 8 years.  The county's goal is to eventually replace or adapt its entire fleet of 306 sanitation vehicles with natural gas vehicles over the same time period.
