Ellesmere Port, Cheshire based paper recycling company, Palm Recycling has secured a contract with Lincolnshire based printing firm, Mortons Print for the collection and delivery of its waste newsprint to Palm's paper mill.
According to the company, the contract included a £50,000 investment by Palm Recycling for the installation of recycling systems and equipment to optimise collections, reduce costs and increase overall revenues.
Under the contract, Palm said that it has been working in partnership with Mortons to deliver a cost-effective system that directly improved recycling rates.
Specifically, Palm claimed that the system introduced innovative has improved recycling through the segregation of waste, which additionally reduced the level of manual handling required and therefore further reducing costs.
Richard Waterson, commercial & marketing manager, Palm Recycling explained that the levels of production at Mortons have been increasing and that Palm was asked to propose a solution to improve recovered paper rates, increase revenues and introduce greater levels of automation.
According to Waterson, the answer was a bespoke management system that allowed Palm to handle all of Mortons recycling requirements including a quality automated system that is fully maintained and serviced.
"With over 55% of recovered newsprint exported from the UK, this contract is great news as the recovered fibre will remain in the UK supply chain supporting British industry, Waterson added.
Palm estimated that 1000 tonnes per year of recovered fibre will be collected from Mortons and transferred to its mill where it will be reprocessed into fresh newsprint for the cycle to start over.
