03 January 2012Waste management company Viridor has been awarded preferred bidder status by the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) to treat residual waste from its four constituent councils over the next 25 years.
According to the company the award follows a procurement process and assessment of submitted solutions by the partnership to ensure that it will meet its landfill diversion targets.
Viridor said that its proposed solution comprises developing a waste to energy facility at its existing landfill and recycling site in Beddington, Sutton.
The new facility would be located next to - and replace - Viridor's existing 92 hectare landfill site where the Partnership currently sends most of the residual waste.
The company said that its proposed £200 million facility would be capable of processing 275,000 tonnes of waste each year and would create around 40 permanent jobs.
Wider environmental benefits will include the landfill diversion of up to 95% of waste delivered to the facility and the generation of up to 26MW of electricity, 22MW of which would be supplied to the National Grid, according to the company.
The SLWP said that the Beddington Lane landfill site, which receives up to 400,000 tonnes of waste every year, is expected to be full within the next 10 years. Once full, the plan is to restore the land to become part of a regional park.
Viridor also claimed that the facility would enable completion and restoration of the landfill site sooner than currently anticipated, creating habitats for wildlife and an open space for the local community.
According to the SLWP, once signed, the contract will ensure that from April 2014, up to 215,000 tonnes of 'residual waste' generated by households in Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton each year is diverted from landfill.
In order to develop a planning application for the proposed facility, Viridor said that it will undertake a thorough consultation with stakeholders and the local community.
The SLWP added that the public planning application process for the project would be "very detailed", and will include a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment considering issues around land use, design, traffic, air quality and sustainability.
Residents in all four council areas will be able to contribute to the planning process in Sutton, which will give equal measure to the views of people in each borough.
As Preferred Bidder, Viridor will now enter into the final stage of the Procurement Process, 'Financial Close', where detailed information relating to the contract will be finalised and agreed with the Partnership. The contract should be awarded by August 2012.
WRG is the Partnership's 'Reserved Bidder'.
