15 February 2011 The Chicago Area Refuse Haulers Association (CARHA) has offered Teamsters refuse truck drivers a five-year final proposal that would raise their wages and benefits.
In wages a full-scale employee will see an increase of 15%. The Association said the proposal includes a 3.3% increase to the wages in the first year, while the Companies' contributions in healthcare (11.7%) and pension programs (14.9%) would also increase.
The association says that it has presented its final offer, and has asked the Teamsters' Local 731 bargaining team to present it to its membership for ratification.
According CARHA, the proposal recognizes the realities of the cost of living in the Chicago area, and considers the rising cost of health care. At the same time, the association says that it needs to meet obligation to its customers to manage costs in the industry.
"We want our workers to receive a fair and competitive pay and benefits package. We believe this does that," said Rich Van Hattem, President of the Chicago Area Refuse Haulers Association.
"Our members have worked very hard to come up with a proposal that is generous in wage increases, and also includes increased contributions each and every year to the employees' pension plan and also the Health and Welfare Fund."
"Under the proposal the Employer will continue to pay the full premium for family coverage and ensures the security of their pensions for the future."
"We are confident our employees will recognize the significant value of this offer and vote to accept it. We are eager to see them return to work and get back to the business of keeping Chicago and its suburbs clean and beautiful." Concluded Van Hattem.
