Plans to build a Waste to Energy incinerator in Elbert County, Georgia have been dropped by GreenFirst LLC.

GreenFirst, - an environmental permitting company operating in Georgia - had been working to develop the incinerator for more than a year.

The company said in a statement: "GreenFirst, LLC, an industry leading environmental permitting company headquartered in Georgia and managing projects throughout the Southeastern U.S., announced today that it is no longer considering the construction of a renewable energy facility in Elbert County."

The statement added that Covanta Energy Corporation, which was scheduled to operate the plant had: "passed on the opportunity to own and operate the plant citing economic concerns."

The proposed 50 MW facility was scheduled to generate electricity using wood waste from the timber industry and municipal solid waste, allowing it to be converted to energy rather than being sent to landfills, the release said.

The proposed $400 million incinerator was first announced in September 2009 by Kauffmann at an Elberton Rotary Club meeting. Commissioners then started to go through the procedures to approve the plan, including holding public hearings and negotiating a host agreement with the company.

The plan also led to the formation of Citizens for Public Awareness, an anti-incinerator group that protested at public hearings and collected signatures on a petition to try to force a referendum on the issue.
