31 January 2012The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) has awarded a long term contract to treat all residual and organic waste generated in the borough to Covanta Energy.
According to the company, under the contract - for which it has been the preferred bidder - it will turn approximately 30,000 tonnes of non-recyclable municipal waste, which would otherwise have ended up in landfill, into a fuel to generate "largely renewable" electricity.
In addition, Covanta said that the 15,000 tonnes of food and garden waste collected in the borough each year will be treated by its organic waste partner, Agrivert at anaerobic digestion and composting facilities in Oxfordshire where it will produce energy and fertiliser.
The non-recyclable waste generated in the Royal Borough will be treated at Covanta's 585,000 tonne capacity Rookery South Resource Recovery Facility, near Stewartby in Bedfordshire.
The company said that the award of this contract is part of its long-term plan to develop a number of waste to energy facilities across the UK.
Covanta Energy's UK managing director, Malcolm Chilton, commented: "By working with Agrivert Ltd our waste management solution will help drive up recycling rates, provide value for money for our clients and will generate significant levels of sustainable energy, by diverting waste away from landfill and using it as a fuel to generate renewable electricity."
Cllr Phill Bicknell, the Royal Borough's cabinet member for highways, transport and environment added: "In four years' time, we can look forward to zero landfill tax when waste that can't be recycled is used to generate energy."
The contract commencement date is set for December 2012.
