Recycling, renewable energy and waste management specialist, Viridor has announced that it plans to submit a planning application for a leachate treatment plant at its Horton, UK landfill site.
The plant is required under the environmental permit for the site and will treat leachate, drawn off the landfill in a similar fashion to the facility, owned and operated by Cemex on the adjacent site. This move will enable the site to comply with UK Environment Agency standards, and allow for safe discharge into the River Adur.
Noting the benefit of the proposed plant on site, a spokesman for Viridor said: “We are aware that transport is one of the issues the local community is concerned about and having the capability to treat the leachate at the Horton landfill means we can reduce the number of vehicle movements on and off site, because we will not need to transport leachate to another location for treatment.
“The proposed treatment works will support the measures we have in place to minimise transport-related impacts, which include a notification to all drivers carrying material for the restoration of the landfill not to travel through Small Dole village before 07:00 hours and observance of a 25mph speed limit with those failing to do so being suspended from the haulage contract”.
Members of the public are encouraged to contact the site management should they be aware of drivers or vehicles operating outside of the above requirements and to provide details of their observations/experiences.
