DTE Biomass New Landfill Gas to Energy Project Boosted by Septage Injection08 December 2011

Ann Arbor, Michigan based DTE Biomass Energy begun operating a 3.2 MW landfill gas to energy facility at the Smith's Creek Landfill in Kimball Township, near Detroit.

According to the company, the landfill, which is owned and operated by St. Clair County, operates one of the first commercial-scale septage injection landfill gas systems in the U.S.

The septage injection system applies material extracted from septic tanks to the landfill to speed the decomposition of organic waste.

The company said that this process not only increases the life of the landfill, but also increases the rate of landfill gas generation used to fuel electricity production.

The electricity is produced at a facility operated by its subsidiary Blue Water Renewables.

The project also incorporates an education centre that the company said will allow schools and community groups to learn about environmentally responsible means of waste disposal, as well as using renewable landfill gas to power electricity generation.

The facility created 75 construction jobs and is expected produce enough electricity to power about 3000 homes.
