A plant which converts mixed plastic waste into liquid synthetic fuel is operational in Ireland and should pave the way for similar facilities in the UK and Europe.
Cynar Recycling's first plant in Portlaoise, Ireland can process up to 10 tonnes of waste plastics per day, using a technology involving pyrolisis and distillation to liquefy the plastics, ordinarily destined for landfill, into low sulphur hydrocarbon fuels which are less harmful to the environment than standard petrol or diesel.
Cynar's chief executive Michael Murray said: ‘We are really targeting the diversion from landfill, taking mixed waste plastics from waste management companies, agricultural plastics collectors and commercial businesses.
‘We take in the mixed waste plastics, produce fuel, sell the fuel and our plan, basically, is to roll them out in other places.
‘We've got this far and the idea is to go now to market throughout the UK, Ireland and Europe.’
