Houston, Texas based biomethane developer and environmental credits supplier, Element Markets, is constructing a large landfill gas to grid project at the APEX Sanitary Landfill in Amsterdam, Ohio.

According to the company, the project at the landfill - owned by Bridgewater, New Jersey based waste management company, Environmental Logistics Services - is expected to produce over 32 million MMBtu of biomethane throughout its operational life - sufficient to power over 19,000 homes.

The company said that project will upgrade landfill gas to produce pipeline quality biomethane and associated environmental commodities to be sold into the power and transportation sectors.

Angela Schwarz, CEO and President of Element Markets explained: "Biomethane produced from this plant will be injected into a pipeline to be used as both a generation fuel and a transportation fuel."

The APEX Sanitary Landfill covers 1285 acres in Ohio's rural Jefferson and Harrison Counties. Currently, the landfill is receiving approximately 1.8 million tons (1.63 million tonnes) of waste annually, which the company said makes it one of the fastest growing landfills in the U.S.

Element Markets said that its in-house development and engineering staff will be managing development of the project, which it expects to be operational in 2013.

The company claimed that its selection to construct the project following a competitive process in which some of the largest U.S. landfill gas developers participated.
