Uganda and India team up to study banana waste

Researchers in Uganda and India are working together to explore the textile potential of the banana fibre, a part of the banana tree generally considered as waste. The research programme will look at the possibilities of  producing items such as curtains, window blinds, table cloths, table mats, nags, ropes and clothing from the fibre.

The banana research and development programme between Busitema University in Uganda and the DKTE Textile and Engineering Institute of India, will establish the mechanical properties of banana fibres, develop different methods of banana fibre extraction and design technologies.

"The research will enhance the profitability of farmers and contribute to the country's foreign exchange earnings as some of these items can be sold at international markets," Busitema University vice chancellor Prof Mary Okwakol said.

A pilot production facility for the extraction and processing of the banana fibre will help banana farmers add value to their crops. Between 50% and 70% of farmers in Uganda produce banana crops, and currently only a small proportion of banana fibre is recycled.

The scheme has also led to the creation of a post-graduate masters degree in textile technology at Uganda’s Busitema University.
