Manure and Waste Powered CHP at Canadian Cattle Farm09 January 2012

An anaerobic digester has been commissioned by Elite Energy to treat organic waste and manure at Canadian cattle farm, Gardiner Farms in Kirkton, Ontario.

According to the company the former waste streams are now being treated in the digester and producing biogas to fuel Elite EnviroGen Energy Modules, Combined Heat and Power units.

The company said that the system is providing most of the heat and electricity for all farm operations as well as private residences located on property. Electricity the farm does not use will be sold back to the utility, resulting in an additional income stream.

The system is another piece in the portfolio of green energy solutions enabling the Province of Ontario to meet its renewable energy goals.

Elite, a Carson City, Nevada-based alternative energy company installed said that at the heart of the system are two Caterpillar 3406 naturally aspirated low-BTU biogas-powered engines.

According to Elite, through its partnership with Caterpillar, Gardiner Farms will have easy access to parts and service for the CHP modules through Toromont Caterpillar in Concord, Ontario.

The company said that the system has a total electrical output of 250 kW, and a heat output of 1.7 million Btu/hour and an overall system efficiency of over 80%.
