Madison County's Department of Solid Waste has released a video to showcase its renewable energy projects such as landfill gas to energy and solar landfill caps.
The video, titled Madison County Renewable Energy Projects, highlights some of the innovations being deployed at the county's landfill sites, including different types of gas collection system.
The county also shows off its solar landfill cap project, which it said was the first of its kind in the U.S. and supplies electricity to the Madison-Cortland ARC Recycling Center.
The county said that its green energy projects located at the County landfill have sparked the interest of a number of area colleges and neighbouring government agencies, and that educational tours of the site are on the rise.
Explaining why the county produced the video, James A. Zecca, a director at the county's Department of Solid Waste, explained:
"We wanted something that could be used as a promotional tool for the Madison County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) to encourage new businesses to relocate to our proposed Agricultural Renewable Energy Park (ARE) and to take advantage of the low cost green energy being produced at the Buyea Rd. Landfill site."
"We also wanted a product that could be used as an educational tool," added Zecca
According to the county the ARE Park will offer low cost 'green' heat and electricity, low cost land for development and the close proximity to the New York State Thruway.
"Development of the ARE Park will put land back on the County and town tax rolls, and create new jobs for the residents of Madison County," said John M. Becker, chairman of the Madison County Board of Supervisors.
