19 January 2012The Hudson Falls waste to energy facility in Washington County, New York has been acquired by Wheelabrator Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of Waste Management.
According to the company, it purchased the facility from the Warren/Washington Counties Industrial Development Agency (WWIDA) for $3.13 million and has assumed management of the operation, which is now officially called Wheelabrator Hudson Falls LLC.
The company said that it began a partnership with the WWIDA in October 2003 with the signing of an operating service agreement.
Since then, Wheelabrator said that it has made $12.8 miWheelabarator 500 TPD Waste to Energy Facility Acquired in New Yorkllion in capital improvements to the facility while operating it in full compliance with state and federal regulations, while processing more than 172,000 tons (156,000 tonnes) and reaching boiler availability of 94% in both 2009 and 2010.
The facility, which has two process lines uses natural gas as an auxiliary fuel.
"The current contract allowed the authority to refinance its debt, saving the counties approximately $6 million over the life of the contract," commented Wheelabrator Hudson Falls plant manager, Maurice Holcomb.
According to the company, the facility processes waste collected in New York State and Vermont, and provides an average of around 84,800 MWh of electricity to the local utility company, Niagara Mohawk - enough energy to power almost 10,000 homes.
Leading up to the closing of the sale, Wheelabrator said that it began preparing for ownership of the facility by finalising new waste-supply agreements with Warren and Washington counties and private commercial haulers.
The company also negotiated a new electric-power purchase agreement with National Grid.
