Viridor Tower Hamlets Awards Three Year Recycling Contract18 February 2012
A three year contract to sort and market mixed recyclable materials arising from households in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets has been awarded to waste management company Viridor.

The company said that it has already been working with Tower Hamlets over the last four years, sorting and marketing the council's 13,000 tonnes of recyclates at Europe's largest Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Crayford, Kent.

Over the previous contract the Viridor said that through the recovery of glass, mixed plastics, cartons, aluminium and steel cans, mixed paper and cardboard, it helped the borough increase its recycling rate from 13% to 29%.

According to Viridor, a part of the Pennon Group, under the renewed contract it will continue its efforts to improve the borough's recycling rates and recover more materials for cost-effective reprocessing.

Dave Fitzgerald, Viridor operations manager for London commented: "We are confident that through our Crayford facility we will be able to further help the council recover more materials for recycling."

According to Fitzgerald, the company has very strict quality protocols for incoming and outgoing materials, which includes an automated reporting system that can help councils identify areas where improvements can be made.

"In addition, last year we installed a state of the art shredder to deal with hard plastics on site, further increasing recycling levels," added Fitzgerald

Jamie Blake, service head, Public Realm, Tower Hamlets Council, explained: "We conducted a competitive tendering process to ensure we continue delivering value for money to our residents. The newly awarded contract will help us do just that."
