ISWA Annual Congress 2011 in Daegu, Korea - Waste Mangagement World

ISWA Annual Congress 2011 in Daegu, Korea

From 17 to 20 October we had an outstanding ISWA Annual Congress in Daegu, Korea. More than 600 participants from 57 countries attended the event themed "Waste to Green: Waste Management for Low Carbon & and Green Growth Society".

While growth is considered important for all countries, greening that growth will be vital for the future health of the planet. There are issues of common concern for all countries with regard to waste and the climate change, mitigation advantages would be something that would be of consideration to all. However, as with every issue there are local considerations that have to be taken into account. Therefore the conference covered all types of waste and all types of technology for dealing with those wastes.

While there are many opportunities to prevent the generation of waste through better resource efficiency measures by industry in the main the local authority sector has a role to play because as was demonstrated by several presentations at the Congress, behaviour change is essential in every sector.

We would like to thank all our colleagues in Korea and the great support team that they recruited for making the ISWA World Congress 2011 such an enjoyable and worthwhile event.

Register now for the ISWA 2012 Congress!
FLORENCE | ITALY | 17-19 SEPTEMBER

Before the summer the organisers of the ISWA World Solid Waste Congress 2012 went out with the Call for Abstracts in which academics, operators, public officials and professionals in the waste industry were invited to submit abstracts to participate in the Congress. The submission deadline is closed now and there has been an overwhelming response, over 400 speakers have replied.

At this moment the abstracts are being examined by the scientific steering committee and on January 10th the oral speakers will be chosen and the final program will be defined. The programme shown on the website is a preliminary version and now, according to the abstracts chosen, the organisers will increase the sessions and number of speakers.

It is now also possible to register for the Congress, as the prices are online, and also to book your hotel through the online system on the website. It may seem a long time away but remember September is a very busy time in Florence so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

A few weeks ago the organisers started to publish every week a new interview with a different person that will participate at the Congress in 2012. Discover more about their background, their goals, their role in the waste industry and, maybe more important, the reason they will attend the Congress.

So if you want to meet the people who will come to Florence, before actually going to Florence, then check every week the website and read the interviews.

Next important date: 10 January 2012, notification of acceptance/rejection. For more information please visit: www.iswa2012.org, or send an email with your question to: carin@iswa2012.org.

See you all in Florence in 2012!

ISWA Declaration on Climate Change and Waste Management

The ISWA General Assembly, which took place in Daegu, South Korea, on 16 October 2011, resolved upon an official Declaration on Climate Change and Waste Management & Recycling. All National Member Representatives present at the Assembly signed the declaration.

ISWA will also be represented with a delegation at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Summit, which will take place in Durban, South Africa, from 28 November – 9 December 2011.

The members of the ISWA delegation, among them ISWA Vice President David Newman, Board Member Erik de Baedts, Climate Change WG Chair Gary Crawford and Communications Manager Gerfried Habenicht, will endeavour to make sustainable waste management – and its positive impact on our climate – an issue at the summit and in the UNFCCC process.

The basis of these activities is a comprehensive lobbying action plan, which ISWA has developed with the aim to make climate funds available for investments in sustainable waste management and recycling.
