Sydney councils to jointly contract waste services

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has proposed to allow certain Sydney councils to jointly tender and contract for waste services within their areas. The idea is planned to stimulate investment in alternative waste technology facilities which will allow MSW to be reused or recycled. If this is a success then councils will be more able to meet their tough waste diversion targets and minimize costs associated with sending waste to landfill.

'The ACCC considers that this proposal is likely to produce efficiencies that will deliver cost savings for the councils and their ratepayers and reduce environmental damage caused by landfill," ACCC chairman, Graeme Samuel said.
