ISWA congress in Lisbon a success

Dr Atilio Savino opening the conference

The annual congress of the International Solid Waste Association took place in Lisbon from 12-15 October and was deemed a great success by staff and ISWA members. The conference kicked off with a presentation by Dr Atilio Savino, president of the non-profit waste organization, and went on to see some of the most high profile names in the waste industry today sharing their views and presenting their findings.

Items high on the agenda for ISWA this year are climate change - and the role that the waste industry can play in mitigating the effects of it, waste management in developing countries - and how to combat the problems they face, and the future of the waste industry.

The ISWA general assembly nominated Julián Uriarte Jaureguízar, the President and Executive Director of ATEGRUS, the Spanish National Member of ISWA, as an honour member at this year's congress in recognition of the work he has carried out for the organization since 1972. He has held several positions during this time including Member of the Scientific and Technical Committee, Chairman of the ISWA 1992 & 1999 Congresses, Chairman of the Regional Issues Committee, Member of the ISWA 2009 Organizing Committee and Member of the Executive Board.

Waste Management World looks forward to bringing you more news and features from ISWA members in 2010.
