Welcome to the annual review issue of Waste Management World. It has certainly been an interesting year in the field of waste with the unusual economic climate, the high profile of climate change and, as always, the emergence of new technologies taking a big chunk of our time and attention.
We have aimed to summarize the essence of the waste market today within these pages, but also provide you with some pertinent and useful reference information for the year going forward. One of our main features, which is particularly exciting, this year is our series of interviews with some of the top CEOs and managers of waste companies today. We have asked some direct, no-nonsense questions about today’s industry and the prospects for businesses going forward. It makes for fascinating reading as you will see on page 21.
As well as our usual coverage of recycling (see Innovate Sorting by Ulrich Kohaupt of Steinert on page 35), waste-to-energy (see Plasma Gasification by Ed Dodge on page 87), landfill (waste the Greek and Cypriot way by Tim Byrne on page 54), biowaste (Advanced Anaerobic Digestion by Graham Neave on page 62) and transport & collection (The Future of Waste Collection? by Katariina Honkio on page 69), we also have pieces on healthcare waste, climate change and waste and the EU’s waste framework directive (page 29).
With all this content jammed in, it’s surprising we have room for our annual buyer’s guide and ISWA member listings, but you will indeed find all this and more contained within these pages.
I hope you find the July-August issue both informative and entertaining.
Best regards
