Across the world, legislation is coming into effect to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, but it remains our primary method of waste disposal. This provides an interesting situation for those working in the landfill sector. While dealing with the fact that suppliers of waste streams are now looking to prioritize recycling and divert waste away from landfill, there remains an ever present need to use the landfills we rely on everyday to their best effect, and also to take into account the variation in waste streams which is the result of the changing regulations.

This edition of Waste Management World takes a look at the role of the landfill compactor – in a piece by our very own Malcolm Bates looking at the Ammassuo landfill site at Espoo in Finland. Landfills today range from the very crudest of open dumps in the developing world, right up to high-tech, environmentally friendly projects which are providing models for new sites across the world. One example of such a project is the Semakau landfill in Singapore, which was the world’s first offshore landfill. It is expected to serve Singpaore’s landfill needs until the year 2040, and is such a forward-thinking site that there are now plans underway to turn it into an ecopark. Keep an eye on our website for a more in-depth look at it.

Other highlights this issue include a look at the southern hemisphere’s largest biowaste plant, and a study of the waste collection system in Copenhagen which has recently undergone a big change.
