Ford Motor Company is to increase recycling and reduce the waste to sends to landfill by 70% across its European production facilities.

The company said that its new targets will amount to a reduction in the average landfill waste generated per vehicle to 1.5 kg by 2016 from a figure of 5 kg in 2011.

The Dearborn, Michigan based motoring giant also claimed that it will reduce water use by 30% saving 2.3 million Euros over the same time period and approximately 1.3 billion litres of water each year. This equates to an average saving of 1100 litres for each of the 1.2 million vehicles it produces each year.

According to Ford it will work both internally and with partners to reduce the resources used in production, reduce the quantity of waste from that production and to ensure that as much waste as possible is recycled or used to generate energy.

The company said that the production of its new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine in Cologne takes just such an approach. The introduction of a new production line and new manufacturing techniques reduced water use by 37% compared to the manufacturing line it replaced.

One part of the process sees the amount of coolant used to produce aluminum engine parts reduced from two liters to five milliliters, according to Ford.

The initiative is builds upon previous actions that have made Ford Europe the global company's lowest producer of landfill waste. Ford Europe claimed that it has cut landfill-waste generation by 40% since 2007 and reduced water use by 37% over the same period.

The company said that the new commitment covers manufacturing in Genk in Belgium, Valencia in Spain, Saarlouis and Cologne in Germany as well as Southampton, Bridgend and Dagenham in the UK.

Genk, Saarlouis and Cologne have previously taken significant steps to reduce landfill and are now claimed by Ford to send zero waste to landfill.
