15 December 2011Hand sanitising wet wipe manufacturer, Nice-Pak/PDI has achieved 'zero landfill' at its Orangeburg, New York based facility by sending over 2000 tons (1814 tonnes) of non-recyclable waste to a waste to energy facility in Peekskill each year.
According to the company it has already exceeded its goal of a 50% reduction in the total quantity of solid waste that it sends to landfill over the past three years.
The company said that following its ongoing efforts, three of its four U.S. manufacturing facilities now recycle all cardboard boxes, barrels and shrink wrap, and send the balance of materials to local waste to energy facilities.
Nice-Pak added that its fourth U.S. manufacturing facility will be converted to "zero landfill" in the near future.
"Over the past several years we have worked hard to maximize our in-plant recycling rate. Now, we are using the small percentage of waste that is non-recyclable to produce cleaner electricity," said Adam Lurie, Vice President of Operations at Orangeburg.
The company claimed that every year, this eliminates the need for approximately 250,000 cubic feet (7100 cubic metres) of landfill, replaces 10 railcars of coal that would otherwise be burned to generate that same electricity, and reduces greenhouse gas production by 1967 metric tonne of CO2 equivalent.
