12 August 2011U.S. based natural gas supplier, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. and Covanta Essex, a subsidiary of Covanta Energy Corporation, have been awarded a contract by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for a compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling station at the Essex County Resource Recovery Facility in Newark, New Jersey.
According to the companies, contract to site, build, and operate the facility follows the growing demand for natural gas fuelled refuse collection vehicles in New Jersey.
The CNG fuelling station, to be built and operated by Clean Energy on the Covanta Essex site, will enable public and private municipal waste haulers to convert their CNG vehicle fleets. Clean Energy claims that natural gas refuse trucks provide significant reductions in emissions and are 90% quieter than traditional diesel trucks.
Construction of the new fuelling station is expected to commence during the third quarter of 2011.
The project is being partially funded by a grant from the New Jersey Clean Cities Coalition, a tax-exempt non-profit organisation for the promotion of the development and use of alternative fuels, alternative fuel vehicles, and the appropriate related infrastructure.
The project is part of a larger grant award from the U.S. Department of Energy using funding provided by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
Covanta Essex operates the Essex County Resource Recovery Facility (ECRRF), is a waste to energy facility which is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and generates approximately 500,000 MWh energy from municipal solid waste per year, while also recycling about 15,000 tons (13,600 tonnes) of metal.
