A project to evaluate the potential to install a 5 MW photovoltaic (PV) solar power facility at the closed Milliken Sanitary Landfill located in Ontario, Canada has been agreed.

California based distributed power developer, Project Navigator's solar power projects development group, PVNavigator, said that it has entered into a lease option agreement with the County of San Bernardino to carry out the evaluation.

According to the company the power that would be generated should the project reach completion would be sold to Southern California Edison and/or the Ontario Airport to assist the utility and the airport in meeting their renewable energy portfolio goals.

The project would be the only renewable, commercial scale solar development on a closed municipal landfill in Ontario.

Project Navigator said that it has fourteen years experience in the reuse of closed landfills, which is has integrated with its more recently developed solar power expertise in the PVNavigator group, to negotiate, engineer, finance and construct small scale, landfill located, distributed solar power projects across the country.

Robert Potter, Project Manager at PVN, commented, "This project moves us one step closer to our goals of developing renewable, solar energy solutions on brownfields and urban located closed landfills that are otherwise deemed as unusable land."

The company said that it will be responsible for managing all phases of the Milliken PV solar project including design, permitting, financing and implementation.

With the 'site control' option agreement in place, Project Navigator said that it will now enter into work on three fronts - an interconnect application, CEQA compliance and power marketing.
