UK based Food waste specialist, PDM is planning to invest £40 million in developing its network of ReFood Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities during 2012.
According to the company, the investment will result in two new plants located in Widnes and East London and follows the completion of its first AD plant at its headquarters in Doncaster, Yorkshire.
PDM claimed that the new facilities will each double the recycling capacity of Doncaster, handling around 90,000 tonnes of food waste each year and producing 4 MWs of energy.
Subject to planning, the company said that the facility in Widnes will be built on its existing site, creating a food waste recycling hub that incorporates rendering, biomass to energy and AD.
Taking food waste generated by retailers, restaurants, hotels and householders, as a feedstock, PDM said that the plant will sell electricity to the national grid and create a nutrient rich fertiliser for use in growing new crops.
Philip Simpson, commercial director at PDM, commented: "Our AD plant in Doncaster is performing well, and we're keen to keep the momentum going in developing our ReFood network to provide regional solutions for food waste across the UK."
The company said that it will incorporate the latest European recycling and recovery technology to ensure that its plants efficiently produce the highest yields of energy and nutrient rich fertiliser.
PDM said that it aims to commence construction on both sites by Autumn 2012, with both plants fully operational in 2013.
