$500 Million Waste to Energy Proposal for Uruguay18 January 2012

The Uruguayan government is considering a solid waste management proposal that would incorporate a waste to energy facility, according to a report in Business News Americas.

The report said that the Italian utility A2A - a multi-utility formed of public companies AEM and AMSA with a reported net income of 308 million Euros in 2010 - had made the proposals.

According to BN Americas, a group of mayors from Uruguay as well as representatives of state power company UTE and officials from the housing and environment ministry will visit A2A headquarters in the Italian city of Brescia in February to study the project.

Brescia is claimed to be home to the world's largest waste to energy plant, which processes 2500 tonnes per day of waste, providing enough power for heating and lighting throughout the city.

Local daily El Pais reported that A2A has offered to invest $500 million in the construction of a new landfill and waste to energy plant.

According to El Pais the Uruguay has previously discarded waste management proposals from investors including US firm Sanitas Partners, which offered to build waste transfer stations and a final disposal center in Durazno department.
