DEP renews Grand Central landfill's operating permit
02-JAN-2008
The Department of Environmental Protection in Pennsylvania, USA has renewed the operating permit for Grand Central Landfill in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, allowing no more than three additional years of operation under the facility's current parameters.
'This renewal allows Grand Central to continue its waste disposal operations within the limited remaining capacity of its current permit,' said DEP Northeast Regional Director Michael Bedrin. 'However, in renewing this permit for the current operation, we've made clear to the company that the once the three year term expires, it will not be extended.'
The existing permit allows the landfill to accept 2750 tons (2455 metric tonnes) per day as an average daily volume and a maximum daily volume of 3000 tons (2679 tonnes) per day.
DEP is currently reviewing Grand Central Landfill's application to expand. A public hearing on the environmental assessment of this application, also known as the harms/benefits analysis, was held in March 2007. DEP is still reviewing that application.
