Sita signs a 22 year contract for a new MBT plant in France
23-NOV-2007
Sita France, a subsidiary of Suez Environment, has just signed a 22 year contract for the design, building and operation of a mechanical-biological sorting centre for domestic waste with Smiritomi, the mixed syndicate responsible for managing waste in the Alès (Gard) region. The contract, which will be set up as a public-private partnership, will generate estimated revenues of €123 million over its life. This mechanical-biological sorting facility uses leading-edge technology in waste treatment and recovery. Located in Salindres, a town 10 km north of Alès, it will allow treatment of 50,000 tonnes of waste per year, some of which will be recovered.
A series of initiatives will limit the impact of the site's activities on the environment: the facility's integration into the landscape, close monitoring of air and water quality, and control of noise and olfactory nuisances. Measures to provide information to the public are currently underway, and 5,000 local residents are receiving informative brochures that include an explanation of the project and the environmental protective measures that have been implemented for it. Sita Sud will also have staff members in the town halls of Salindres and Saint-Privat des Vieux, every other Tuesday starting in mid-December.
Information on activities and current developments at the site will be available online on the website www.sitasud.fr, which is expected to be launched at the end of 2009.
