Wood waste gasification plant to generate 10 MW in UK

 

Birmingham Bio-Power has awarded a £47.8 million contract for the design, build and maintenance of a new 10.3 MW biomass gasification facility in Tyseley, Birmingham. Site preparation work will begin immediately with completion scheduled for early 2016.

The plant will be supplied with approximately 67,000 tonnes of class A-C recovered wood waste secured under a long-term sustainable contract with a local supplier.

Over its 20 year lifespan, the facility is expected to reduce greenhouse emissions by an estimated 2.1 million tonnes and save 1.3 million tonnes of waste wood, otherwise destined for landfill.

Power will be generated through the gasification of the waste wood, which is then combusted to create steam to drive a turbine unit generating electricity that will be exported to the national grid.

The gasification technology is provided by Nexterra Systems from Canada and will include four gasifiers, a high pressure boiler and a flue gas treatment system.

The provided system qualifies as an Advanced Conversion Technology (ACT) under UK legislation, meaning that the power generated by the project will receive the highest band of Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs).

The investment consortium financing the power plant compromises of the Green Investment Bank, Gravis Capital Partners, Balfour Beatty plc, Eternity Capital Management and Foresight Group’s UK Waste Resources and Energy Investments (UKWREI) fund.

Delivered under as an Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) project, MWH Treatment will undertake its construction and commissioning before taking on an operational role running the plant under a five year Operations and Maintenance contract.
