e-waste recycler increases compact fluorescent lamp capacity

Uk e-waste company Electrical Waste Recycling Group (EWRG) has increased lamp throughput at its 120,000 sq ft plant in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire after switching processing from its Harlow plant.

The facility can process Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) via the lamp recycling facility and then during the process send the plastic/metal bases into an e-waste processing facility.

The company said this enables them to gain greater recovery of the materials in the lamp base, enabling higher material recovery without the “product ever leaving the plant”.

Following a £500,000 investment in factory mercury abatement systems the lamps and the materials within them are cleaned of vapours, thus allowing a saleable recovery of the processed parts.

Figures released by the Environment Agency earlier this year showed that there had been a year-on-year increase in lamp recycling rates from 2008.
